A transformation story

Today, the following story appeared in the East Anglian Daily Times:

A man who was found sleeping rough in Woodbridge is now setting out to help others after overcoming his alcohol addiction.

Less than six months ago, Chris, in his 40s, was consuming more than 130 units of alcohol a day and living on the streets. Originally from Manchester, Chris was discovered by Anglia Care Trust's (ACT) Martin Pender in February. He had been cut off by his family and thought recovery was an impossible dream.

With assistance from Brian Peters at ACT's Drug and Alcohol Recovery Outreach Services, part of Turning Point's Suffolk Drug and Alcohol Service, Chris is now on the path to recovery.

Having successfully stopped drinking, he is now keen to mentor others facing similar struggles.

Chris said: "I feel 100 times better thanks to the help of Brian, Martin and Turning Point. With their help, I know I'm getting my life back. I've stopped drinking, which has enabled me to get back relationships with my family. I want to work beside others in my situation and help them like I have been helped."

He attributes his recovery to the continuous support from the ACT team, describing them as "brilliant, reliable, helpful, honest and always there to listen."

Brian Peters, who has been a major support to Chris, said: "From the first day Chris was referred to me, you could see he’s such a genuine, nice fella. He’s a genuine role model for others in his position and I’m so proud of how far he’s come."

Chris is now set to move into ACT’s STARS accommodation. He aims to stay alcohol-free, return to full-time employment, and find his own home.
