Mike's Energy Saving Tips

Saving energy is important because it helps protect the environment and reduce energy bills. By using less electricity and being more careful with energy at home, you can make a positive difference. The following tips offer some practical ways to save energy in everyday life:

Home Heating & Boiler Efficiency

  • Turn your thermostat down by 1°C to save around £90/year.

  • Reduce your combi boiler flow temperature to 60°C.

  • Bleed radiators if you notice cold spots.

  • Turn down radiators in rooms you rarely use.

Draught Proofing & Insulation

  • Install draughtproofing on doors, windows, keyholes, and letterboxes.

  • Check your loft insulation is sufficient (aim for 270 mm thickness).

  • Close curtains at dusk to prevent heat loss.

  • Seal any visible gaps that allow cold air in (avoid blocking ventilation).

Hot Water & Bathroom Use

  • Keep showers to 4 minutes to save water and energy.

  • Insulate your hot water tank (fit a British Standard tank jacket).

  • Fix any leaking hot water taps promptly.

Lighting

  • Replace all bulbs with LED alternatives.

  • Turn lights off when leaving a room.

Laundry

  • Wash clothes at 30°C.

  • Only run full loads in the washing machine.

  • Avoid using a tumble dryer - line dry clothes whenever possible.

Kitchen & Cooking

  • Only boil the amount of water you need in your kettle.

  • Try batch cooking to reduce oven use.

  • Consider an air fryer or slow cooker for efficient cooking.

Appliances & Electronics

  • Turn appliances off at the plug (avoid standby mode).

  • Unplug chargers when not in use.

Smart Meter & Monitoring

  • Install a smart meter (free from your energy supplier).

Check your in-home display to track real-time usage.
